Northern Lights in Northern Finland

On his blog M-Impresión jouralist and photographer Reiner Wandler has just posted four impressive photos of Aurora Borealis a.k.a. Northern Lights.

The pictures were taken near Saariselkä, Northern Lapland, Finland, approximatly 300km north of the nordic circle - and show a perfectly green Aurora against a black sky and white snow. (I know - in this photo the snow doesn't look white at all - but there's other shots - and you'll see what I mean...)

Why am I so touched by these images? Well - I guess because after over 12 years of travelling to Finnland I must admit I still havent seen a proper Aurora... - ..and I'm just waiting for that day I can finally post my very own pictures of Northern Lights here on bilderbook..=)

Currently heavy a vast geomagnetic storm is hitting planet earth. Solar winds, or actually the particles they solar winds bring along are the main cause for the phenomenon called Northern Lights - or Aurora Borealis. When the particles hit the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere).
