My brother actually decided, that our first computer should be an IBM PC (what
a choice!) - the chose the actual components, my parents then bought it - and
finally my brother and I had the great opportunity to 'play' with it: install
hardware, run software - and write our first (very) basic progamms. Even the first
games we actually had to 'programm' ourself - or at least to copy the code printed
in one of those pretty rare computer magazines and then modify it.
But one happy day the Microsoft Flight Simulator was bought -
and then ran quite smoothly on our (very) personal computer.. day in day out,
and sometimes all through the night. You could actually even fly on a New York
terrain - and would be able to have some very basic flight seeing / sight seeing
experience.: Taking off from one of New York's airports (we always perfered "JFK",
but sometimes also took off from "la Guardia") you could fly over Brooklyn,
see the Brooklyn Bridge
(or even fly under it!), then some Manhatten vectors would appear.: you could
clearly see the World Trade Center, the
Empire State Building, Broadway (one thick white pixel line between the black
polygons) - and if you flew around (or even between) the twin towers - and then
looked south, the Statue of Liberty would appear..
We usually flew to Manhatten as described above, then south, then once around
the Statue of Liberty - then back up north, carefully(!) between the two towers,
then past the Enpire State Building and then probably make a round over Central
Park. Wow.

Flight Seeing / Sight Seeing the pixel way: view from the cockpit of the
Flight Simulator ("I"): to the left you can see the "Broadway",
in the middle you can see the "Twin Towers" of the World Trade Center
- and the white little pixels in the background represent the Statue of Liberty.
That was actually the first application tag was really fun - the first "real
game" that ran on this very personal computer - not just some boring office
application without graphical user interface ..but a 3d real time flight simulation
- "smoothly rendered" vector graphics - with "sound" and "color"..!
For the first time i saw "the light" ant the end of the technology tunnel
and looked very forward for all tomorrows computers.. and of course for my first
real travel to New York City - which I finally enjoyed very much this spring..
only 20 years after my first flight seeing / sight seeing experiences..:)

the IBM PC - a very personal desktop computer..:)

the monitor was not just an "ordinary monitor" - but an
"IBM - Personal Computer Color Display"
..for the ones who only believe their eyes the colorfulness of this monitor was
even underlined by this red-green-blue color bar..:)

..with modem..!
..no internet though..:(
..just other computers you would "call" and then connect to.. to browse
whatever.. or even "chat"..:)
..although it would've actually been easier and cheaper to "call"
the person directly instead of logging in to a distant computer.. and then "chat"..
but.. well.. hmm.
