March 2007: it's planned that the Airport Tempelhof is closed next year - that means no more air traffic will take place at this airport. For the rest of the building the city of Berlin is looking for investors that are willing to run the airport building without running the actual airport.
The Tempelhof Airport is probably by far neither the most beautiful nor the largest airport - but located quite downtown Berlin its walls are at least packed (and partly covered) with Berlin/German history
I joined a guided tour through the Airport Tempelhof - and took the oportunity to take some pictures. The tour led us through some areas of the building - according to this the selection of images differs a lot: from the roof top of the airport with a nice view to the maneuvering area to the basement of the building with it's spacious cellars, connection tunnels and air-raid shelters we gained some insight into the dimensions of this largest building of all Europe (rated by the square meters).
A view on an air photograph gives you a glimpse of how large the building actually is - and where all those square meters could be hidden: the actual terminal of the airport is the rather small building in the very middle of the picture..
a walk through the building is only the one of two possible touristic ways of getting closer to the airport - the other option could be a sightseeing flight with a so called raisin bomber - on this picture you can see it landing..
again the so called raisin bomber
and again the so called raisin bomber - with some tourists, freshly landed and deboarded, taking pictures of the historical plane
view to one of the tunnels underneith the Airport Tempelhof - this one is used by trains and cars - and still in use..
underneith the Airport different types of air-raid shelters can still be found - this one 'nicely' decoreated
on the 'Platz der Luftbrücke' ('Airlift Square') you can find the monument for the Airlift that supplied West-Berlin with food during the Berlin-Bockade (June 24, 1948 to May 11, 1949)
